Having the right type of gas meter can help you monitor your gas usage and only pay for the energy you use.
Whether you’ve moved into a new property, require a new meter type, or your current gas meter is faulty, Neom Utilities can help you find the right meter for you.
The first step when installing a new commercial gas meter is to find your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN). This is a unique number used to identify the supply to your property. This can usually be found on your meter or a recent bill.
Once you’ve found your meter number, it’s important to consider the type of gas meter you need for your property. This will depend on how and when you use your energy. At Neom Utilities, we can provide advice on the right meter type for you during the commercial gas meter installation process.
When you’re ready to get started, you can use our simple gas meter installation form to book your new connection. When you switch with us, you may even be entitled to receive a free commercial gas meter installation.
How Your MPRN Status Affects Your Gas Meter Installation
Your MPRN Status refers to the current state of your meter. There are four main gas meter states:
- Live
- Disconnected
- New
- Removed
If you don’t know your current gas meter status, you can contact the MPAS (Meter Point Administration Service). You can also enter your postcode into the Energy Networks Find My Operator Checker.

How To Read A Gas Meter
After you have located and identified your Gas meter, you may want to take a reading. Your gas meter will be imperial or metric. An imperial meter has four main numbers and a metric meter has five. Here's how you read a gas meter for each type:
- Dial Gas Meters - this is the most challenging to read. You will see a series of dials, each marked 0-9. You read the numbers each pointer is showing on each dial, from left to right. If the pointer is between two numbers, you note the lowest number, except if the pointer is between 0 and 9 in which case note 9. Ignore any red dials, dials marked '100 per rev' and the largest dial, usually in the centre.
- Digital Meters - a common digital meter will display a series of numbers on a screen. Simply just take note of the numbers from left to right, ignoring any digits in red, any printed zeroes or any digits after a decimal point or a space.
- Smart Meters - you don't have to worry about taking any meter readings as they're sent straight to your supplier. If you do need to take a reading, follow the instructions for digital meters.
What Type of Commercial Gas Meters are Available?
The right gas meter type for your business will depend on how and when you use your energy. Installing the right meter type can help you manage your usage and reduce your bills.
Here, we’ve you can find some of the common Gas meter types and how they work.
Standard Gas Meters
A standard, single-rate gas meter will charge your usage at a flat rate. Businesses using most of their gas during peak hours will often use standard meters.
However, a standard gas meter does have drawbacks. You will have to submit meter readings manually, meaning it will not be the best option for monitoring usage.
Smart Gas Meters
Installing a smart meter at your premises can provide more accurate readings and easier monitoring of your gas usage.
Your smart meter will send your readings to your supplier automatically. This removes any need for estimated billing allowing you to only pay for the gas you use.
Many suppliers will offer to install your smart meter free of charge when you switch tariffs with them.
Typical Commercial Gas Meter Installation Cost
The cost to install a commercial gas meter will vary depending on your premise's size and your business needs.
For example, if you work in the hospitality sector, like restaurants, and hotels, your demand for a steady gas supply could be greater than if you worked in the financial industry.
To work out how much a typical commercial gas meter installation would cost, you need to consider the following:
Gas Meter Size
Gas meters are available in different sizes, depending on your consumption demand. Check the table to see what meter type you require, based on business needs and schedule a gas meter installation today.

Other costs can include how and where your meter will be housed. For example, a concrete base if it’s a larger gas meter and needs a freestanding gas kiosk.
If you require automated meter readings for half-hourly consumption or a converter, will also be factored into the costs, including MOP fees, and COP metering panels for sites using more than 100kW per year.
Finding The Best Gas Contract
For the majority of contracts we deal with, we build the cost of meter installation into your new energy contract, so you don’t have to worry about paying in lump sums and can spread payments throughout your contract length.
